A Bethany at Home Story
Nearly four years ago, Russ was discharged from rehab on LifeBridge at Bethany Life. After working hard to regain strength following ongoing health challenges related to a stroke he experienced at age 34, he and his wife were determined to remain in the home they had thoughtfully adapted over 16 years.
At first, they managed transportation to appointments on their own. But as time went on and mobility challenges increased for both of them, even routine medical visits became exhausting and stressful.
“We got to the point where I said, ‘Russ, I can’t safely take you anymore,’” she shared. “It was physically demanding, and honestly, I just don’t like driving anymore. It was too much.”
That’s when she remembered reading about Bethany at Home in a newsletter. The service description stood out — especially one detail: caregivers that could stay with them during appointments.
“That’s exactly what we needed. Not just a drop-off. Someone who stays. I didn’t care what the cost was. It meant less stress for me and less stress for Russ.”
More Than Transportation — Peace of Mind
Now, when their caregiver arrives, there’s an immediate sense of relief.
“As soon as she pulls up, I feel it. I know we’re in good hands.”
Their caregiver, Ciera, knows their home, their routines, and their needs. She helps Russ safely navigate the ramp using his gait belt, positions mobility equipment precisely, assists with transfers, and even remembers the small but meaningful details — where his coat is kept, how to help with car entry, and what to watch for in terms of strength and balance.
“She knows our strengths and our weaknesses. She treats us with compassion and kindness. It’s not just a job to her — she has a big heart. We’ve even told her, ‘You’re like family.’”
Appointments can be long and tiring, especially when multiple visits are scheduled in one day. Knowing someone is waiting, ready to assist at a moment’s notice, makes all the difference.
Support Beyond the Doctor’s Office
Their experience with Bethany at Home expanded beyond medical transportation. When they needed reliable snow removal, they turned to the team again.
“They come in the middle of the night so we can stay in bed. They clear the ramp, the steps, wipe off the van, and even make sure our generator has proper clearance. They pay attention to detail.”
Even after an unexpected mishap one winter, the team handled it with care and accountability — reinforcing the trust that had already been built.
“They truly care.”
Staying Independent — Together
Their home is carefully set up to support aging in place, taller toilets, grab bars, a walk-in shower with a seat, lift chairs, and thoughtful adaptations that make daily life manageable. They also have a small circle of support: a housekeeper, a handyman, and two daughters with families of their own.
“It’s nice to let family be family,” she explained. “They have their own lives. We don’t want them worrying about getting us to every appointment.”
Bethany at Home fills that gap — preserving independence while reducing strain on loved ones.
“If you want to stay in your home, don’t hesitate,” she says to others considering care. “Absolutely don’t hesitate.”
Looking Ahead
Today, scheduling is seamless. Morning appointments work best. Communication is easy. There’s a trusted system in place.
“After a year, I know this is something we want to continue. Just keep doing what you’re doing.”
For this couple, Bethany at Home isn’t simply a service. It’s reassurance. It’s dignity. It’s stability. And most importantly, it’s the ability to remain in the place they call home — together.
